Marion Family Fun Day

The club had the chance to have a stall and a BBQ last Sunday at the Marion Swimming Centre. A big thanks to Rhi and Di for their fabulous support at this great event. It was a glorious day and more than 700 punters came through the turnstiles to enjoy the free entertainments and demonstrations. There was a jumping castle, reptile petting zoo, clowns, face painting,  free raffles and many stalls from local clubs to keep us all entertained.

Hans (Development Squad) swum in the demonstrations with some of the senior Marion swimmers. And the Henley water polo club played a demonstration game. We also had the chance to observe the German life saving team go through their moves.

Another big thank you to John and the team at the Centre for putting on such a great event and letting us come and play.

Centenary Celebration Dinner & Book Launch for 'Salt in Our Blood'

Cheryl and Phil McEvoy and Jill and Alan Fredericks
Nearly 150 past and current members of the Swimming Club gathered together to celebrate the Centenary of the Club at a Celebration Dinner at the Glenelg Golf Club on 13 October 2012.

Guests travelled from interstate and overseas to join with friends for the celebration.  Rita Shepherd, who was made a Life member of the Club in 1967 and is currently the most senior Life Member was joined by other Life Members June Sturm, Anne Chartier, Peter Graham, Janine Molloy, Peter Hobbs, Trevor Carmichael, Brian Skeates and Garth Adamson.

The evening began with lots of chatter as guests arrived and enjoyed pre-dinner drinks before they took their seats at tables covered with white cloths, red serviettes and vase of red and white roses.  Some took the early opportunity to inspect the six boards of photographs and memorabilia in the room.

While food orders were being taken the Master of Ceremonies for the evening, our own voice of Olympic and World swimming, Peter Graham introduced Club President, Ken Eastham, to welcome guests on this special occasion.  Following the first course, Ken then presented the latest Life Member, Garth Adamson with his badge.  The renewed chatter was stilled only by the arrival of the main course.  Following this, Bob Fox, the Chairman of SwimmingSA, who was a late arrival following his return from the Swimming Australia AGM and Presidents’ Forum earlier in the day in Sydney, proposed a toast to the Club for its great achievement.  This toast was ably responded to on behalf of the Club by Trevor Fullston, past parent, committee member and member of the State Development Committee and currently a major helper at the monthly Bunnings BBQs.

It was then the turn of Glenda Bowen-Pain to launch the Club’s 100 year History Book Salt in our Blood.  Glenda is a past President of SwimmingSA and had written the Foreword to the Book.  Although never a member, Glenda knew a lot about the Club and its history and was able to entertain us all with stories relating to some of the people who had featured among the many in the history and stories from the past.  Following Glenda’s enthusiastic launch of the book, the authors, Janine Molloy and Lyn Carmichael then shared a few of the facts relating to researching and writing of the book.  I think it is fair to say that they were relieved, tired, happy and proud of their achievement.  They then spent the next hour signing books for eager purchasers.

Dessert and coffee ended the very enjoyable meal but the chatter went on until late.  A wonderful evening was had by everyone who attended.

If any person has photos they would like to add to the initial collection please send them to the Club’s Public Relations Officer via our web contact link preferably with names of those in each photograph.

Copies of 'Salt in Our Blood' can be purchased from the Thebarton Aquatic Centre for $10.

Thebarton Aquatic Centre Update

The Thebarton Aquatic Centre is in upgrade mode. If you haven't seen it for yourself, we have recently purchased more of our blue matting for around the centre to improve both the safety (and aesthetics!) of the pool, as well as adding steel capping around the pool gutters.

We have also upgraded our pool filtration system so that we are using UV filters in all our pools. This is a state of the art filtration system which will give us a better quality of water.

With summer right around the corner our swim school places are filling up fast so book in soon to make sure you have a place!

We have also introduced two new swim school levels this year:

Goldfish: This level is for ages 2.5 - 4 year olds who have anxiety from being separated from their parents or who have issues putting their face in the water.

Teens: This level is for beginner teenagers aged 12 - 18 years old.

Our birthday parties are also going swimmingly with our Wipe-Out being a huge hit with the kids.

At our recent AGM of the 15th July Brian Skeates put forward a nomination for Life Membership of the Henley and Grange Swimming Club.

In Brian's words, "He joined the Club in 1994 and has been a member for 18 years.

He was an instigator of the Arks Squad in 1998 and achieved Level one  coach (bronze) status in 1998. From this time he was Assistant Coach to Glenda Edmonds. He continued in this position until the sad passing of Glenda. He then took on the position of Head Coach of ARKS from 2008. He continues Coaching; now for a total of 15 years.

He spends much of his time organising and attending swimming carnivals and  also on social outings with ARKS. He has held several positions on the Henley and Grange Committee as Nominations Officer, Chief Referee and is currently Chief Starter.

He was a willing worker when the Club established this wonderful Centre which the Club now calls home. More recently he has been Chef Extrordinaire at the Monthly Bunnings BBQ’s, raising money for the Club.

It would no surprise to all here today that this dedicated, jovial and loyal person is Garth Adamson."

Congratulations and a big thank you to Garth.
